Repeat Courses
Students repeat classes for various reasons such as:
- Retaking a course that was withdrawn from a previous semester
- Are required/ want to receive a higher grade
- Unsuccessfully passed during a previous attempt(s)
Students are able to take previously attempted courses, however. Due to federal and state guidelines, not all repeat courses are eligible to receive aid. In addition, some courses maybe eligible for federal aid while not eligible for state aid.
Federal Eligibility
Students are able to receive federal aid to repeat a course once.If a student received the following grades they may be eligible to receive federal aid to repeat the course(s) (count towards attempted credits not earned):
- U, W, F
- And passing grades of D or better
Although students are eligible to receive aid, if these grades are received, and their SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) isn't maintained their financial aid eligibility will be suspended. Please use the following link to learn more about federal SAP requirements.
State Aid
A student can repeat a course and have the course count as part of the minimum full-time or part-time course load for financial aid purposes when the student did not previously earn credit for the course.
A student who receives an F or a W in a course does not earn credit; therefore, courses in which F or W grades have been earned can be repeated and count towards full-time or part-time study requirements. If a student receives a passing grade (like a D or C-) and wishes to retake their course for a higher grade; they cannot receive TAP funds. UNLESS, said course requires the student to pass with a C or better.
Although students are eligible to receive aid, if their TAP SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) isn't maintained their eligibility will be suspended. Please use the following link to learn more about New York State TAP SAP requirements.
